Earlier, when the Venerable One was about to be born, his father dreamt of a white elephant bearing a jeweled throne upon which rested a bright pearl; entering through the gate, its light illuminated the fourfold assembly. Upon awakening, the child was born. Later, meeting the Venerable Buddhamitra, he served at his side and never slept; because his ribs never touched the mat, he was named the Venerable Pārśva ('Ribs'). When he first arrived in Pāṭaliputra, he rested under a tree. Pointing his right hand at the ground, he said to the assembly, “When this ground turns golden, a holy person will enter the gathering.” As soon as he spoke, it turned golden. At that time, the elder's son Puṇyayaśas stood before him with palms joined.
