> Chan Master Changtong of Mount Xuedou in Mingzhou was a native of Xingzhou, whose secular surname was Li. He entered Mount Queshan to leave home, and at the age of twenty received the precepts at Kaiyuan Monastery in his home prefecture. He studied the sūtras and vinaya for seven years in all, and then said, "Mātaṅga entered the Han and translated these writings; Bodhidharma came to the Liang—what matter did he further illuminate?" He thereupon traveled afar to study under Upādhyāya Cen of Changsha.
> Cen asked him, "Where are you from?"
> The Master said, "A native of Xingzhou."
> Cen said, "I say you did not come from there."
> \[The Master\] said, "Did the Upādhyāya ever dwell there, or not?"
> Cen affirmed it and then permitted him to enter his chamber. Later he went to Dongshan and Shishuang, but the flavor of the Dharma was no different.
> At the end of the Xiantong era of the Tang, he traveled to Xuancheng. The commandery governor petitioned to establish a Chan cloister on Mount Xiexian, named Ruisheng Cloister, and invited the Master to reside there.
> A monk asked, "What is the secret chamber?"
> The Master said, "Wind does not pass through."
> \[The monk\] asked, "Who is the person in the secret chamber?"
> The Master said, "All the sages seek to behold him, but cannot see him." He also said, "A thousand Buddhas cannot conceive of it; ten thousand sages cannot discuss it. Are heaven and earth destroyed or not destroyed? Does empty space encompass it or not encompass it? Nothing can be compared to it, and the three times cannot express it."
> \[A monk\] asked, "What is the birthplace of the Buddhas of the three times?"
> The Master said, "They do not consent to acknowledging that you have the three times." After a long pause he also said, "Do you understand? If not, just turn toward the place where Buddha cannot be reached and realize it; it is always present amidst the times. When consciousness is exhausted and attainment is accomplished, it arises in the blink of an eye—this is already harming it, so how much more so for words and phrases?"
> During the Guangqi era, bandit hordes arose. The Master led his disciples to Siming. In the second year of the Dashun era, the commandery governor invited him to reside at Xuedou, where his transformative teaching flourished grandly.
> In the second year of the Tianyou era, year yichou, in the seventh month, he manifested illness. He assembled the congregation, burned incense, finished delivering his final instructions, joined his palms, and passed away. His age was seventy-two. On the seventh day of the eighth month of that year, a stone stūpa was erected at the southwest corner of the cloister.
