> Chan Master Shanzhao of Fenzhou ascended the hall and addressed the assembly, saying: "Every single phrase must possess the three mysterious gates. Each mysterious gate must possess the three essentials. There is illumination and there is function. Either illumination first and function later, or function first and illumination later, or illumination and function simultaneous, or illumination and function not simultaneous. Illumination first and function later: for the time being, I want to discuss it with you. Function first and illumination later: you must be an adept before it will do. Illumination and function simultaneous: how will you withstand it? Illumination and function not simultaneous: how will you approach it?" A monk asked, "What is the source of the Great Way?" The Master said, "Digging the earth to seek the blue sky." \[The monk\] said, "Why is it like this?" The Master said, "Recognize the hidden mystery." \[The monk\] asked, "What is the guest within the guest?" The Master said, "Joining palms before the hermitage to question the World-Honoured One." \[The monk\] said, "What is the host within the guest?" The Master said, "Face-to-face, without companion." \[The monk\] said, "What is the guest within the host?" The Master said, "Battle clouds stretch across the sea; drawing a sword, churning the Dragon Gate." \[The monk\] said, "What is the host within the host?" The Master said, "Three heads and six arms alarm heaven and earth; furious Nata strikes down the emperor's bell."
