> Chan Master Fulin of Mount Dashi in Huangzhou was a native of Jingzhou whose family name was Yuan. He was born into a Confucian family. In his youth he turned to the Śākya clan, tonsured and receiving ordination under Chan Master Qianzhu of Xuanjing Temple. Wandering in pilgrimage, he met Master Heze, who showed him that unthinking, numinous awareness does not arise from conditions. Thereupon, he clearly discerned the truth. Later, he arrived at Mount Dashi in Huangzhou, where he built a hermitage and resided. Chan companions from the four directions who relied upon him were very numerous. In the second year of the Xingyuan era of the Tang (785 CE), he passed into extinction at the age of eighty-two.
