> Chan Master Guangbao of Mount Meng in Yishui was a native of Bingzhou whose family name was Zhou. He first visited Upādhyāya Heze and served him diligently. One day Heze said to him, “Your name is Guangbao ('Light-Treasure'). Names are determined by substance: the treasure is inherently one’s own; the light is not sought from without. Even if you use it at will, there is not the slightest lack; throughout the long night it illuminates without pause. Do you still believe this?” The master said, “As for believing, I do believe it; yet I do not know whether the light and the treasure are identical or different.” Heze said, “Light is treasure, and treasure is light; what names of identity or difference could there be?” The master said, “When the eyes and ears condition sounds and sights, do they run parallel or do they interpenetrate?” Heze said, “Put aside parallel action and interpenetration for now. What phenomenon do you point to as the substance of sound and sight?” The master said, “According to what you say, then no sound or sight can be grasped.” Heze said, “If you understand that the substance of sounds and sights is empty, you will also believe that the faculties of the eyes and ears, as well as the ordinary and the sacred, are equal and like an illusion. The principle of their running parallel or interpenetrating is self-evident.” From this the master attained realization, bowed in taking his leave, and departed. At first he lived in seclusion on Mount Meng in Yishui. In the second year of the Yuanhe era of the Tang (807 CE), he entered complete cessation at the age of ninety.
