> Chan Master Yanjun of Guanyin Cloister in the Eastern Capital was a native of Xingtai. His family name was Lian. When he first went to study at the ancestral seats, he traveled everywhere through Hengshan, Lushan, Min, and Shu. Once, passing through a deep gorge in Fenglin, he suddenly saw rare treasures manifest. His companions looked at each other, intending to take them. The Master said, "When the ancients hoed their gardens and struck yellow gold, they treated it like broken tiles and rubble. When a thatched roof covers my head, I may need this to make offerings to monks from the four quarters." Having finished speaking, he cast it aside and left. He went to visit Touzi. Touzi asked him, "Where did you lodge last night?" / The Master said, "In the immovable bodhimanda." / Touzi said, "Since you say it is immovable, how did you get here?" / The Master said, "Could arriving here be movement?" / Touzi said, "Originally, you lodged nowhere, so it is so." Touzi silently acknowledged him. Soon after, he arrived in the Eastern Capital. It happened that there was the Junior Protector of the Liang, Li Yan, who was the elder brother of Li Hanzhi, the military commissioner of Heyang. He deeply believed in the inner scriptures and especially revered the Master. Therefore, he gave up his residence to establish a cloister called Guanyin Mingsheng, and invited the Master to dwell there. When the two emperors Gaozu and Shizong of the Zhou dynasty were living in obscurity, every time they entered the abbot's quarters, they would kneel in homage. When they ascended the throne, they specially bestowed on him the purple robe and the title Great Master Jingjie. His assembly usually numbered several hundreds. In the third month of the bingyin year of the Qiande reign era, he showed illness, gave his final admonitions to his disciples, and then, with a joyful countenance and joined palms, passed into extinction. He was eighty-five years of age and sixty-five years in the monastic order. On the eighth day of the fourth month of that year, a stūpa was erected for him in the village of Fengtai in the eastern suburbs.
