The former Upādhyāya Liangjie of Dongshan asked, “Where have you recently left?” The Master said, “Wuling.” Dongshan said, “How is the Dharma way of Wuling compared to here?” The Master said, “In barbarian lands, bamboo shoots sprout in winter.” Liangjie said, “Cook fragrant rice in a separate cauldron to make an offering to this person.” The Master then went out. Dongshan said, “This fellow in the future will run the people of the world to death!” While the Master was planting pine trees at Dongshan, an Old Man Liu asked the Master for a gāthā.
