> Chan Master Dunru of Baima in the Eastern Capital of Luoyang. A monk asked: 'What is the monk's fundamental matter?' The master said: 'The wind does not pass through the ten directions; a mute delivers a distant letter.' The monk said: 'What letter does he deliver?' The master then joined his palms and raised them to his head. A monk asked: 'What is the person in the secret room?' The master said: 'Just born, he cannot be attained; not valued when unborn.' The monk said: 'What is this that is not valued when unborn?' The master said: 'It is your father.' A monk asked: 'Three thousand li away, I looked toward Baima. Yet when I arrived, why do I not see it?' The master said: 'It is you who do not see it; what business is that of this old monk?' The monk said: 'Please, upādhyāya, point it out.' The master said: 'If pointed out, there would be no relation.' A monk asked: 'What is the student's fundamental matter?' The master said: 'Last night at the third watch, the sun was at high noon.' A monk asked: 'What is the transcendental matter of the Dharma body?' The master said: 'The frog at the bottom of the well swallows the moon.' (A monk asked Huanglong: 'What is the frog at the bottom of the well swallowing the moon?' Huanglong said: 'Nothing can be done.' The monk said: 'If so, then it has swallowed it.' Huanglong said: 'Let it swallow.' The monk said: 'What about after it is swallowed?' Huanglong said: 'A fine frog!') A monk asked: 'What is the student's most urgent point?' The master said: 'Even an agile bird is deemed slow; in the blink of an eye it is already too late.' A monk asked: 'What is the meaning of \[the Patriarch's\] coming from the West?' The master said: 'A monkey with a mark on its forehead reaches for the moon in the waves.'
