> Chan Master Huitong of Lingyan in Jizhou was a man of Changxi in Fuzhou. His surname was Chen. He received his training at Guishan. A monk asked, "What is the realm of Lingyan?" The Master said, "Pines and cypresses, dense and deep, thickly screen it." The monk asked, "What is the person in the realm?" The Master said, "Night after night monkeys cry." A monk asked, "What is a student's own proper affair?" The Master said, "Why cast aside real gold to pick up broken tiles and rubble?" The Master later resided at Hoshan and passed away there.
