> Chan Master Daoxian of Mount Luoshan in Fuzhou was a native of Changxi in the prefecture, with the family name Chen. He was ordained at Guishan. Having reached the proper age and received the full precepts, he traveled widely through all quarters. He once visited Shishuang and asked, "What should one do when going and staying are not at peace?" Shishuang said, "You must completely exhaust it directly." The master was not satisfied, so he went to consult Yantou and asked the same question. Yantou said, "Let it go or stay—why concern yourself with it?" Thereupon the master was fully convinced. Soon after, he traveled to Mount Qingliang. The military commissioner of Min drank of his Dharma flavor and invited him to dwell at Mount Luoshan, granting him the title "Great Master Fabao." When he first ascended the hall, having just taken the seat and gathered his robes, he said, "Take care!" A moment later he said again, "Those who do not yet understand, come forward!" At that time a monk stepped out and bowed. The master raised his voice and said, "What great suffering!" The monk rose and was about to ask a question, but the master shouted him out. A monk asked, "What is the extraordinary phrase?" The master said, "What are you saying?" A monk asked, "The Buddha emitted a white curl of light from between his eyebrows, illuminating eighteen thousand worlds. What is the light?" The master said, "Speak up!" The monk said, "Which world does it illuminate?" The master shouted him out. A monk asked, "Having hurried here to rely on you, I ask the master to receive me once." The master said, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "I do not understand." The master said, "The arrow has already passed." A monk asked, "When the nine daughters are not accompanied, who is the one to guide them with compassion?" The master said, "Ask in a loud voice." The monk was about to ask again, but the master said, "Where did it go?" A monk asked, "What is the propagation of the ancestral school?" The master stretched out his foot and showed it to him. A monk asked, "How can one discern the matter when meeting the sharp edge head-on?" The master held up his ruyi scepter. The monk said, "I beg the upādhyāya to bestow compassion." The master said, "Too far off!" A monk asked, "What is the most wondrous phrase?" The master said, "It is laid bare—do you recognize it?" The monk was about to advance a word, but the master said, "A lapse into speech!" Sthavira Dinghui came to study. The master asked, "Where have you come from?" Dinghui said, "Far off I left western Shu; recently I set out from Kaiyuan." He then stepped forward and asked, "How is it right now?" The master said, "Go drink some tea." Dinghui had still not withdrawn. The master said, "The autumn air is slightly warm—go!" Dinghui went outside the Dharma hall and sighed, saying, "Today I intended to attack the fortress of Luoshan, but my bow is broken and my arrows are spent. Let it be, let it be!" and then went down to join the assembly. The next day, when the master ascended the hall, Dinghui stepped forward and asked, "The doors and windows having been thrown wide open, who is the one right before the porch?" The master shouted. Dinghui was speechless. The master said again, "Your plumage is not yet fully grown; for now, go!" A monk quoted Hanshan's poem and asked the master, "What is it like when 'a hundred birds carry bitter flowers'?" The master said, "A chaste woman recites in her chamber." The monk said, "What is it like when 'a thousand li are traversed in a single breath'?" The master said, "Seeing a guest off, walking outside the courtyard." The monk said, "What is it like when 'wishing to go to Mount Penglai'?" The master said, "Leaning on a pillow and gazing at the macaques." The monk said, "What is it like when 'taking this to supply provisions'?" The master said, "An ancient sword before a skull." A monk asked, "How is it that 'upon the tips of all the hundred grasses, it is entirely the ancestral master's intention'?" The master said, "It pierces your eyes!" A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the ancient patched robe rotting away before the sound?" The master said, "Leaning against the wall." A monk asked, "In front is a fathomless precipice of ten thousand fathoms, and behind are tigers, wolves, and lions. What should one do right at such a moment?" The master said, "At ease." A monk asked, "Who is the master of the three realms?" The master said, "Do you still know how to eat your rice?" When the master was about to pass away, he ascended the hall and gathered the assembly. After a good while, he stretched out his left hand. The rector was at a loss, and then ordered the monks on the eastern side to step back. The master then stretched out his right hand, and again the monks on the western side were ordered to step back. The master said to the assembly, "If one wishes to repay the Buddha's kindness, there is nothing superior to circulating the great teaching. I am returning, I am returning! Take care!" Having spoken, he smiled and passed into quietude.
