> Master Xingfa Shaoqing of Longshou in Zhangzhou was a native of Quanzhou whose lay surname was Chen. In his youth, he studied sūtras and treatises at Lingyan Temple. After his lecture studies were accomplished, he deeply aspired to dhyāna, and went to inquire into the Dharma in Xuefeng’s room. Serving diligently for several years, he was awakened through conditions. While attending \[Xuefeng\] during walking meditation, he saw taro leaves moving. Xuefeng pointed to the moving leaves and looked at them. The Master replied, “Shaoqing is terribly afraid.” Xuefeng said, “It is what is in your own house; what are you afraid of?” Thereupon the Master was suddenly awakened, and abruptly ceased wandering elsewhere. Soon he was invited to dwell at Longxi. A monk asked, “An ancient said that the jewel hall has four corners, and one corner is always exposed. What is the corner that is always exposed?” The Master raised his whisk. A monk asked, “Without storing a single grain of provision, how can one relieve the hunger of ten thousand people?” The Master said, “Like snatching a sword in front of a chivalrous swordsman; seeing that you are not a clever fellow.” A monk asked, “If a completely blind person comes, does the Master still receive him?” The Master said, “Before and after, one should widely meet such an opportunity.” He asked, “Is that not receiving him?” The Master said, “This fellow comes here to butt in.” He asked, “What about where ears and eyes do not reach?” The Master said, “You have no such doing.” He said, “In that case, it is heard.” The Master said, “A truly deaf fellow.” Lord Wang, the governor of Zhangzhou, revered the ancestral style and memorialized to grant him the purple robe and a master's title.
