> Great Master Baowen Weijin of the Pratyutpanna Bodhimanda on Mount Nanyue was a native of Fuzhou. He was accustomed to practicing austerities, never wearing silk or padded cotton, but only worn patchwork robes to endure the cold and heat; at the time he was called a dhūta. When he first visited Xuefeng, he entered deeply into the profound mysteries; later he asked about the Dharma at Xuansha's assembly, and their mind-seals tallied together. One day he said to Sthavira Jian, "I hear that you have commented on the Śūraṅgama Sūtra." Jian said, "I would not dare claim so." The Master said, "How do you comment on the 'two Mañjuśrīs'?" Jian said, "I request the Master to judge." The Master then fluttered his sleeves and left. During the Guanghua era of the Tang dynasty, he entered Mount Nanyue and resided at the Eastern Repository of Baoci (also called the Sansheng Repository). In the repository there was a mirror lamp, which had been crafted by the third patriarch of the Huayan school, Great Master Xianshou. Upon seeing it, the Master was suddenly awakened to the gates of the vast Dharmadhātu with its manifold Indra's nets, and to the image of buddhas displaying their radiance. Thereupon he praised it, saying, "This is the marvelous achievement of an ancient sage; if one were not endowed with the wisdom of inconceivable skillful means, how could it have been created?" He then composed five five-character verses; those who read them awaken to the mutual interpenetration of principle and phenomena. Later he passed away on Mount Nanyue. During the Kaiping era of the Liang dynasty, the Master compiled the Continued Baolin Record in four fascicles, recording the origins and course of succession in the Chan school after the Zhenyuan era. He also composed the Seven-Character Verses on the Ground of Awakening, which extensively clarified the dependent origination of the various teachings, and separately authored the Biographies of Eminent Monks of Nanyue, all of which circulate in the world.
