> Master Zhiyue Liaozong of Gushan in Fuzhou was a native of Fuzhou. When he first set out on his travels, he went to Huanglong in Ezhou. He asked, “Having long looked up to Huanglong (Yellow Dragon), on arriving here I only see a red-spotted snake.” Huanglong said, “You only see a red-spotted snake and do not yet recognize the Yellow Dragon.” The master said, “What is it?” Huanglong said, “Surging continuously.” The master said, “If suddenly encountering a garuḍa coming, what then?” Huanglong said, “Life would be hard to preserve.” The master said, “If so, then it will be swallowed up by him.” Huanglong said, “Thank you, Ācārya, for the offering.” The master was not enlightened at that moment. Soon he returned to his home mountain of ordination, paid respects to the National Master, and had the subtle intention opened and revealed to him. Afterwards, he succeeded to the mountain gate as the third generation. Ascending the hall, he said, “If I fully set forth the ancestral vehicle, where would you comprehend it? Therefore I tell you: past and present are constantly manifest; substance and function do not obstruct each other.” A monk asked, “I do not ask about the rest; what is the seed of the born king?” The master said, “The golden branches and jade leaves do not resemble each other—what is that like?” The monk said, “If so, then within sameness one cannot find difference.” The master said, “What about this affair of being unable to find difference?” The monk said, “How can the golden branches continue?” The master said, “These are still words from outside the gate.” A monk asked, “Does empty space also know how to function or not?” The master lifted his staff and said, “This monk deserves a beating.” The monk was speechless.
