> Chan Master Xuanmi of Miaosheng in Lufu. A monk asked, 'How is it when the four mountains face each other?' The master said, 'The red sun casts no shadow; in the dark earth, no one knows the tone.' He said, 'I do not understand.' The master said, 'The crane penetrates through the cluster of peaks; how can it turn its back or face forward?' He asked, 'How is it when two dragons fight over a pearl?' The master said, 'The strongman has no intention to display his fury, yet the light is submerged.' He asked, ''A single tune of Xuefeng is sung by a thousand people.' When trimming the lamp in the moonlight, which is brightest?' The master said, 'Without sound, the harmony is not unified; how could brightness and darkness contain it?'
