The Master went up to the hall and said to the assembly: "Is there anyone who can perceive it? If someone can perceive it, what sort of worn-out straw sandal from a lake is it? If you cannot perceive it, upon falling to the ground it makes a golden sound. You have stood for a long time without anything the matter." A monk asked, "What is the great meaning of the Buddha Dharma?" The Master said, "All of you sthaviras, everyone speak for yourselves." \[The monk\] asked, "What is discussing the truth and countering the mundane?" The Master said, "What is a hired laborer asking?" \[The monk\] said, "What is according with the mundane and going against the truth?"
