> Chan Master Xuanliang of Dongchan in Fuzhou. A monk asked, "Originally there is neither delusion nor awakening; why then are there sentient beings?" The Master said, "A lapse into speech." \[The monk\] asked, "Patriarch to patriarch transmitted one to another the Dharma seal; now whose direction does the Master succeed?" The Master said, "Special thanks for bearing witness." \[The monk\] said, "Then Bailong personally conferred the prediction at that time, and today you respond to the sages to ferry across the deluded ford."
