> Chan Master Faduan, \[known as\] Huiyue, of Bao'en Guangjiao Monastery in Hangzhou (the third generation to reside \[there\]). The Master went up to the hall and said, "For several nights I have talked of east and spoken of west with you sthaviras, yet without reaching the source. Today I shall throw wide open skillful means and speak it all at once for you sthaviras. Do you still take joy and delight \[in this\]? You have been standing long. Take care!" A monk asked, "The student has come up like this; please receive me, Master." The Master said, "I will not receive you." \[The monk\] asked, "Why do you not receive me?" The Master said, "Because you are far too clever."
