> In the fourth year of the Taiping Xingguo era, there was an official examination of monks on the scriptures. The senior elders of the monasteries all wrote down their Dharma names; the Master alone was unversed in writing. At the time, the Controller General Li Xian asked the Chan Master, "Does the World-Honoured One understand writing or not?" The Master said, "Everyone in the realm knows." At the beginning of the Chunhua era, without illness, he ordered his attendant monk to prepare a bath. After bathing, he bequeathed admonitions to his disciples, sat peacefully, and passed away. A stūpa was erected on his home mountain. Three years later, his disciples moved the stūpa; opening the shrine, they saw that the Master's entire body was intact, his appearance dignified, and his beard and hair had grown longer. They welcomed him into the new stūpa.
