> Gushan said, "If you want to know this matter, it is like a single sword." A monk asked, "I am a dead corpse; what is the sword?" Gushan said, "Drag this dead corpse out!" The monk complied, immediately returned to the Sangha hall, packed his bags, and left. In the evening, when Gushan heard that he had gone, he said, "A good blow of the staff is called for." (Dongshan Qi said, "If this monk did not approve of Gushan, what fault did Gushan have? If he did approve, why did he leave at once? Moreover, was Gushan's staff to reward him or punish him? Sthaviras with eyes, try to discuss this!")
