> Chan Master Xuanben of Lingyin in Hangzhou. A monk asked, "How is it when the clam contains \[the pearl\] before it is split open?" The Master said, "From where does the light come?" \[The monk\] asked, "Linji shouted as soon as someone entered the gate, and Deshan struck with a blow as soon as someone entered the gate. What is the meaning of this?" The Master said, "When the sky clears, not willing to go." The Master saw a monk reading a sutra and thereupon asked, "What sutra are you reading?" The monk was silent. Thereupon \[the Master\] presented a verse, saying: / "Reading the sutra without knowing the sutra, / You needlessly strain your eyes. / If you wish not to damage your eyes, / Distinctly and clearly know the sutra."
