> Chan Master Ziying of Baoning in Jiankang Prefecture was a man of Qiantang. Ascending the hall, he held up his staff and said, "The sun and moon cannot rival its brightness; the rivers and seas cannot contend with its depth; Mount Sumeru cannot match its height; heaven and earth cannot equal its solidity. The wisdom of sages and ordinary people cannot reach it. Tell me: what strong point does this have?" After a long pause, he said, "Its joints are clear and distinct, born naturally straight. When ice and snow are struck open, it divides piece by piece; when white clouds are pierced, it relies on their strength." He struck the meditation bench and stepped down from the seat.
