> Duke Qingxian, the upāsaka Zhao Bian, whose courtesy name was Yuedao. When he was over forty years of age, he cast aside sounds and sights and set his mind upon the ancestral school. It happened that Fohui came to reside at Nanchang in Quzhou. The duke became close to him day by day, but Hui never allowed him to utter a single word. Later he was in charge of Qingzhou. In the leisure left from government affairs, he often sat in peaceful meditation. Suddenly a great thunderclap startled him, and he instantly tallied with awakening. He composed a gāthā, saying: / 'Sitting silently in the official hall, resting emptily against the desk, / The mind-source is unmoving, clear and still like water. / A single peal of thunder splits the crown of the head, / Awakening that which has belonged to one's own home all along!' / When Hui heard it, he smiled and said, "Zhao Yuedao has simply hit the jackpot." Earlier, Duke Zheng of Fu had not taken any interest in the ancestral gate. The duke encouraged him in a letter, saying: "I respectfully submit: Your official standing is at such an extreme of wealth and nobility; your virtue and character are so flourishing; your good fortune, long life, health, and peace are so complete; your retirement in leisure is so exalted. That which has not yet received much of your mindful attention is only the one great matter nidāna of the Tathāgata. If you can single-mindedly and sincerely seek what is to be verified and awakened to, then on a future day I will congratulate you." When the duke reached seventy-two years of age, he retired with the title of Junior Preceptor to the Crown Prince and returned home. Relatives and old village neighbors met him as of old. He built a high studio to please himself, and inscribed a gāthā on its intent, saying: / 'With gold worn at the waist, I have already retired into seclusion; / The news within this is also ordinary. / If people of the world wish to know the old man of the high studio: / He is merely the fourth son of the Zhao family from Ke Village.' / He added, "By all means avoid mistaking it!" Approaching death, he left a letter for Fohui, saying, "Were it not for the Master's usual warnings and instructions, when reaching this point I would surely have had no strength." Hui mourned him with a gāthā, saying: / 'In official service, you were an auspicious omen for the state; / In retirement, you served as a standard for the world. / In the mortal realm, the Golden Grain has departed; / In the heavens, the Jade Pavilion is completed. / The sword of wisdom is without the slightest flaw; / The ice jar is completely pure to the bottom. / On the road along the Gu River in the spring breeze, / The solitary moon shines bright among the clouds.'
