> Chan Master Weisheng Zhenjue of Huangbo in Ruizhou was a son of the Luo clan of Tongchuan. While staying in a lecture assembly, he happened to scrape the window mullions with a fan, producing a sound. He suddenly recalled the doctrinal teaching: "Drums are struck simultaneously in all ten directions, and in ten places they are heard at once." Thereupon he attained great awakening and reported it to the lecture master. The lecture master instructed him to travel and inquire. The Master went directly to Huanglong. Later, because the governor of Ruizhou entrusted Huanglong with selecting an abbot for Huangbo, Huanglong gathered the assembly and posed a challenge, saying, "Chanting verses atop the bell tower; planting vegetables beneath the bedpost. If anyone can speak to this, he will go to serve as abbot." The Master came forth and answered, "A ferocious tiger sits blocking the road." Huanglong was greatly pleased and immediately dispatched the Master to go. From then on, all quarters looked up to him. He ascended the hall and said, "Linji's shout and Deshan's stick are left behind to serve as models for Chan practitioners. Guizong's turning the millstone and Xuefeng's rolling the ball—this kind of household style receives the upper stream. If it were Huangbo, it would not be so: neither a shout nor a stick, nor turning a millstone, nor rolling a ball. In front is the desk mountain; behind is the main peak. They block your eyes and press against your face. If you can see it here, you will attain the stage of non-retrogression, and to the end of future time you will not seek from another. If you cannot see it, the supreme taste of ghee will turn instead into poison." He ascended the hall and said, "Solitary and still: the toad bright and clear descends into the empty valley. Vast and expansive: the sunlight shining brilliantly flows across the four seas. On the road to Caoxi, human footpaths are severed; before the Many Children Pagoda, crowds bustle like a market. Even if you understand it here, distinct and clear, this is not yet the livelihood of a patch-robed monk. A great fellow must knock off the cangues and break the chains in the hell of darkness; he must set fires and seize the soup in the midst of hungry ghosts; he must topple the Pavilion of Maitreya and tear down the Hall of the King of Emptiness. Uproot the wondrous sprouts and auspicious grass by their roots, and allow thistles and thorns to grow over the entire ground!"
