> Chan Master Hongzhun of Yanqing in Fuzhou was a native of Guilin. He spent a long time following Chan Master \[Huinan\]. By nature pure and prudent, he never crossed others. When he heard of someone's good deed, it was as if it came from himself, and an overflowing joyful aura arose on his brow. When he heard of someone's wrongdoing, he would clasp his palms and bow to empty space as if reproaching himself. All who saw him laughed at him, yet the master's sincerity remained one and the same from beginning to end. He became abbot at Yanqing. In his twilight years, he resigned from monastic duties and resided at Hanxi Temple, having passed eighty years of age. Day and night he had no other affairs; aside from sleeping and eating, he only chanted Sanskrit tones praising Avalokiteśvara. At the time of his passing, his disciples had all gone to attend an offering by a dānapati; only a servant boy remained. Carrying his chime, the master sat before the Earth God shrine, recited the Peacock Sūtra once, bid farewell, and returned. He sat serenely with closed eyes and passed away. For three days his body did not lean. Villagers came to view it, crowding like a wall. Suddenly opening his eyes and smiling, the master had them sit on the ground. After a short while, his disciples returned. The master called them to stand at his right and took them by the hand. After watching them for as long as it takes to cook a meal, he quietly departed. His facial expression did not change, and his cheeks were rosy as if alive. Monastics and laypeople made a statue of him and enshrined it.
