> Chan Master Weiheng of Shengye on the Southern Peak. A monk asked, 'Having just entered the monastery, I beg the master's instruction.' The master said, 'Wishing to travel a thousand miles, one step is the beginning.' The monk said, 'Throughout the twelve periods of the day, how should one practice?' The master said, 'The white clouds have no mind; the blue sky has the sun.' He instructed the assembly, saying, 'Whether there is profit or no profit, do not leave the marketplace. Never mind Master Wang selling his body; tell me, is there anyone who will make an offer on the rice of Luling? If no one does, this old monk will sell it and buy it himself.' After a long pause, he said, 'Walking eastward, one does not see the profit of walking westward.' He struck once with his staff.
