> Hermitage Master Yong of Jicui on Mount Huangbo instructed the assembly, saying, 'Ever since this mountain monk came to reside in this hermitage, there has been no Chan to preach and no Dharma to transmit, nor any exceptional rare treasures. I have only preserved a single piece of firebrand for continuing the fire, leaving it for future people to ensure that its smoke and flames never cease and its light shines perpetually.' Thereupon he threw down his whisk. At that time, a monk picked it up from the ground and blew on it next to his mouth. The master then shouted and said, 'Who knew that from this fellow's side, the firebrand for continuing the fire would have its smoke dissipated and fire extinguished!' Thereupon he flicked his sleeves and returned to the hermitage. The monk stuck out his tongue. The master also once asked the monk Shenqi, 'I have not seen you for a long time; what have you been doing?' Qi said, 'I saw that Canon Custodian Wei has a place of peace and joy.' The master said, 'Try to cite it to me.' Qi then recounted what he had attained. The master said, 'You are right; Wei is not yet right.' Qi could not fathom it. He returned and told Wei. Wei laughed loudly and said, 'You are not right; Yong is not wrong.' Qi ran to Jicui to question Master Nan about it. Nan also laughed loudly. Hearing of this, the master composed a verse, saying: / 'Light and darkness intertwine in the dynamic of killing and bringing to life; / The realm of a great man is known by Samantabhadra. / Born of the same branch, yet not dying of the same branch; / Making the old awl in the hermitage fall over laughing.'
