> Chan Master Shanpi of Zuyin in Enzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "Penetrating above, piercing below." \[The monk\] said, "What is the Dharma?" The Master said, "Piercing below, penetrating above." He then said, "Penetrating above, piercing below; piercing below, penetrating above. Delusion has a thousand distinctions; awakening has no two kinds." He gave a shout. Again ascending the hall, he said, "A thousand families' gates, ten thousand families' doors. The poor are poor, the rich are rich. If one has not yet caught a glimpse of it, the three destinies are not yet suffering." He struck with the fly-whisk once. Again he said, "Everyone uniquely shines; each is the ultimate standard. When Zuyin speaks like this, there is extraordinary loss and benefit." He then clapped his hands once and said, "Alas! Leading people into thorns and brambles again!" He gave a shout. Again he said, "The vast moon in the pool; the white clouds on the ridge. Bodhidharma's coming from the West was not to speak like this." Holding up his staff, he said, "It is also quite marvelous that the staff can explain the inconceivable." He struck the incense stand and got down from the seat. Again he said, "What can serve as a beam serves as a beam; what can serve as a pillar serves as a pillar. A sharp-witted patch-robed monk immediately knows where it lands." Suddenly taking up the staff, he said, "Do you know what this can serve as?" He struck the incense stand once and said, "Do not say it has no use." He struck it again. Again he said, "Look, look! The wooden senior uncle in the hall received a slap from the holy monk. He ran off to see the karmadāna, and received two slaps from the karmadāna. The open pillar chuckled with laughter, striking this senior uncle. Zuyin, seeing injustice along the road—" He then took up the staff and said, "Come, come! Even if it is the holy monk, he must also take a blow of the stick." He struck the incense stand and got down from the seat.
