> Chan Master Huayan Zhenyi Huilan of the Eastern Capital ascended the hall. "Great Master Bodhidharma sat wall-gazing for nine years. Before he opened his mouth, it could not help but make people suspicious; yet seeing Shenguang, the lecturer, his hands and feet became flustered, and he said, 'I originally came to this land / To transmit the Dharma and save deluded beings. / A single flower opens into five petals, / And the fruit naturally ripens.' At that time, had there been a fellow who had behind his head eyes illuminating ancient and modern, and in his hands tongs and hammer severing empty space, the moment he saw him speak thus, he would have seized him straight by the chest and asked him, 'Setting aside the single flower and five petals for a moment, what is the Dharma that you transmit?' Waiting for him to open his mouth, he would have overturned his meditation couch; even if Bodhidharma exerted his full capacity, he would have retreated three thousand li, avoiding entangling his descendants down through a thousand ages. How could Huayan today act in vain? Not only will I reorganize the decayed guidelines, but I also intend to vindicate you all of your grievances." He then took his staff, laid it crosswise on the table, and called to the assembly, "Where has Great Master Bodhidharma gone?" Throwing down the staff, he stepped down from his seat. Ascending the hall, he took up his staff and said, "In the assembly on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa it is called twirling a flower; before Shaoshi Peak it is called attaining the marrow. Ancient worthies from the past could only look on from the side; lineage masters of later generations all fold their hands. Huayan today cannot follow the waves and chase the billows; I intend to bring forth the spring colors of the entire world before the peak of ten thousand fathoms. Do you understand? The skull has no joyful consciousness; the withered tree possesses the dragon's roar."
