> Chan Master Jueran Baoyue of Bao'en in Changzhou was a son of the Zheng family of Yuezhou. He ascended the hall \[and said\], "Students should not engage in empty words; they must seek wondrous awakening. To cast aside wondrous awakening and engage in empty words is like chasing after foul stench. Though it is so, rarely does one meet someone who pierces the ear; frequently one encounters those who notch the boat." One day he addressed the assembly, saying, "Worldly conditions easily defile; the enterprise of the Way is difficult to achieve. Exert yourselves!" Having finished speaking, he passed away.
