> Chan Master Qianming Yongyin of Mount Zhongliang in Xingyuan Prefecture was a native of this prefecture. At first, he resided at Faji. A monk asked: "Changing from the Vinaya to Chan is not without reason. I have come forward and beg the Master to speak directly." The Master said: "A clear and distinct single phrase, yet experts are still deluded." The monk said: "The Han River must flow into the sea; the disc of the moon ascends straight to the highest peak." The Master said: "For now, you may understand the words." He asked: "When the Bhagavat appeared in the world, golden lotuses welled up from the earth. When the Upādhyāya appears in the world, what auspicious sign is there?" The Master said: "Yesterday it rained; today it is clear." The monk said: "Is there anything further beyond?" The Master said: "There is." The monk said: "What is the matter beyond?" The Master said: "East, west, south, north, above, below, and the four intermediate corners." He then said: "Trust in this matter! Who does not receive its favour? It is very much like the solar disc positioned in space: if one can only turn the illumination backward, it is of itself completely luminous. It does not rely on extensive learning; it is originally complete. Magnificently functioning in adaptation, clearly manifest before us. Vacuous, beyond the emotional defilements, it pervades the entire Dharma realm. Above and below in empty space, it is not within discursive thought. What separation could there be with the great earth, mountains, and rivers?" He then held up his whisk and said: "The former Buddhas have already entered extinction; the future Buddhas are not yet born. Right at this very moment, why do you not come to an awakening? Then, without eradicating afflictions, you immediately realize bodhi; without leaving birth and death, you directly achieve complete enlightenment. Even if the blue-eyed barbarian monk \[Bodhidharma came\], he could not add or subtract a single fraction. Although it is like this, I venture to ask you all: What is the matter that can neither be added to nor subtracted from?" After a long pause, he said:
> "A brand-new pavilion, a realm of the Buddha's house; / That the Vinaya becomes a Chan abode—how could that be accidental? / The fundamental matter has never been added to or subtracted from; / Let it be passed down to people throughout the world as it will."
