> Chan Master Huaiqing of Jingde on Mount Tiantong in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "No sand enters the eye." The monk said, "How should I comprehend it?" The Master said, "No water enters the ear." The monk said, "In that case, I make my prostration." The Master said, "The eastern house lights a lamp; the western house sits in the dark." He ascended the hall and said, "The West Lake faintly reveals the mountain peak's elegance; / The pavilions are uneven as if painted in a picture. / Practitioners of Chan dwell together in the Jetavana; / Do not let an entire lifetime pass in vain." He then stepped down from the seat.
