> Chan Master Changtan of Yuwang in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "What is being within being?" The Master said, "Atop the Golden River Peak." The monk said, "What is non-being within non-being?" The Master said, "In front of the Prajñā Hall." He ascended the hall: "A thousand flowers contend in blooming, and a hundred birds sing of spring—this is the phrase pointing upward. The Buddhas appear in the world, and kalyāṇamitras give rise to compassion—this is the phrase pointing downward. What is the phrase that does not involve either path? If you recognize it, breath issues from the crown of your head. If you do not recognize it, an earthen ox plows a stone field." He struck the Chan couch and stepped down from the seat.
