> Chan Master Zhiben of Mount Yunggai in Tanzhou was a native of Ruizhou and a son of the Guo family. On the day he opened the hall, a monk asked, "When the Buddhas appear in the world, the heavens rain down four kinds of flowers. When the Upādhyāya appears in the world, what auspicious sign is there?"
> The Master said, "Hearing a thousand times is not as good as seeing once."
> \[The monk\] asked, "How is it after seeing?"
> The Master said, "Blind."
> \[A monk\] asked, "What is the pure Dharma body?"
> The Master said, "Without junior servants in the house, one does not make a gentleman."
> \[A monk\] asked, "When using mind to seek mind, how can it be found?"
> The Master said, "A Persian learning the Chinese language."
> \[A monk\] asked, "What is the student's place of emergence?"
> The Master said, "Xuefeng was originally a native of Lingnan."
> \[A monk\] asked, "How is it when one's bare face is presented?"
> The Master said, "A scene of ugliness and clumsy disgrace."
> \[A monk\] asked, "Everyone has an ancient mirror. What is the student's ancient mirror?"
> The Master said, "Smash it to pieces and then come, and I will tell you."
> \[The monk\] said, "It is already smashed to pieces."
> The Master said, "In the land of the northern barbarians, bamboo shoots sprout in winter."
> \[A monk\] asked, "The ancients said, 'Speak of what cannot be practiced; practice what cannot be spoken.' I wonder, how does one speak of what cannot be practiced?"
> The Master said, "The mouth is under the feet."
> \[The monk\] asked, "How does one practice what cannot be spoken?"
> The Master said, "Tread upon the tongue."
> \[A monk\] asked, "Knowing the Master has long harboured a jewel in his pouch, today, right here on the spot, please lend it briefly for a look."
> The Master said, "Just now it was precisely borrowed away by someone."
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall: "Those who leave have their nostrils reaching to the heavens; those who come have their feet treading upon solid ground. But tell me, where is the Patriarch's intention placed?" After a good while, he said, "'Long did I regret that when spring departed there was no place to seek it, / unaware that it flowed into here.'"
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall: "The clue on the high terrace: open your mouth and immediately that is it. If indeed that is it, what clue is there? The moon is cold and the wind is high; the water is clear and the mountain emerald green."
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall: "Knocking out a wedge with another wedge—what rest could there be? If you wish to attain rest, knock out the wedge with a wedge." He gave a shout.
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall. In a loud voice he called the attendant. The attendant responded. The Master said, "Has the great assembly gathered yet?" The attendant said, "The great assembly has already gathered." The Master said, "Why has that one not come to attend the inquiry?" The attendant was speechless. The Master said, "Arriving, yet not checked off."
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall: "A full mouth cannot utter it, yet phrase by phrase it is very distinct. Full eyes gaze but cannot see it; mountain upon mountain in layers of wild green. The drum sound is not yet understood, how much less the tolling of the bell!" He gave a shout.
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall: "The ancestral grandfathers were towering and distinct; the sons and grandsons are petty and groveling. There is a place to hide the head, but no place to expose the horns. May I ask patch-robed monks, how do you grope for it?"
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall. Holding his staff horizontally, he said, "Teeth like knives and swords, face like iron; eyes emitting flashes of lightning, their light never ceasing. The hand holds caltrops weighing ten thousand catties, casually knocking down the moon at the edge of the sky." He struck \[the ground\] once.
> A monk asked, "What is the lion that bites people?"
> The Master said, "In front of the Five Old Men Peaks."
> \[The monk\] asked, "Could this one bite people?"
> The Master said, "Today you picked up your life."
> \[The Master\] ascended the hall: "On the head one carries Mount Sumeru; under the feet one treads upon the four great oceans. Breathing in and out gives rise to wind and thunder; bodily movements generate the five colors. If you can recognize him, you can freely let the months and years change. But tell me, who recognizes him?" He gave a shout and said, "You field-barn slave!"
