> Judicial Commissioner Guo Xiangzheng, courtesy name Gongfu, styled Layman Jingkong, delighted in waters and rocks and did not covet flashy pomp. Because of this, he visited Baiyun. Baiyun ascended the hall and said, "Last night on my pillow I composed a mountain verse to thank the great scholar Gongfu for our twenty years of friendship at Mount Lu and his diligence in visiting Baiyun from afar today. I must cite it for the great assembly, and request that hereafter you cite it clearly to all quarters. How could this verse merely thank the great scholar Gongfu? It is intended straightaway to strip off the flesh-sticking undershirts of patch-robed monks under heaven who have nostrils! Do not say I did not tell you." He then said, "'Shang da ren, qiu yi ji; hua san qian, qi shi tu; er xiao sheng, ba jiu zi; jia zuo ren, ke zhi li ye.'" The commissioner was intensely puzzled. Later, hearing a young child chanting it, he suddenly had an awakening. He reported it to Baiyun in a letter. Baiyun answered with a verse: / "To hide the body, no need to shrink the head; / to conceal your traces, why retract the feet? / The golden crow at midnight spans the sky; / the jade rabbit cannot catch up with it." / During the Yuanyou era, \[Guo\] went to Nanshan in Quzhou to visit Quan Wanjuan and requested him to ascend the seat. The commissioner stepped forward, took up incense, and said, "Dry wood by the seashore turns to incense when it reaches the hand; burned in the brazier, it pierces across the Fragrance Accumulation \[Realm\]. For the Tathāgata's nostrils to perform this great matter, one must declare it before the assembly before it is accomplished. The old man of Yunju had a seamless cloth shirt and handed it down to Nanchan. The Chan Master wears it neither too long nor too short: stepping forward, all Buddhas yield their seats; stepping back, the sea waters settle into clear ripples. Today he yawns and stretches, causing the six kinds of quaking." He then called out, "Does the great assembly fully understand? When there is high spirit, it adds to the high spirit; where there is no romance, it is also romantic." Quan said, "Alternately making fools of each other." The commissioner said, "Caused by whom?" / In the early Chongning era, he arrived at Wuzu, where he invited Wuzu to ascend the seat. The commissioner stepped forward, took up incense, and said, "This single pinch of incense I burn in the brazier to make an offering to my abbot Dharma-brother, the Chan Master. I humbly pray that upon the broad and vast seat you rip open your face and release our late master's form and appearance, letting all of them portray it. Why is this so? / We met of old beside Baiyun Cliff; / past days and today, affairs are not the same. / In the quiet night the water is cold and fish do not bite; / a single censer of incense disperses over White Lotus Peak." / Wuzu then said, "'Namo sadatapraya.' Such, such—how many times did I gaze out over Baiyun Creek! Plum blossoms of Huangmei bloom amidst the snow. Not such, not such—tender willows hang golden threads; and one must come in response to the season. Have you not seen Layman Pang asking Master Ma, 'Who is the person that does not keep company with the myriad dharmas?' The Great Master said, 'Wait until you swallow all the water of the West River in a single gulp, then I will tell you.' Great assembly! Swallowing all the water of the West River in a single gulp exhausts the ten-thousand-fathom deep pool to the bottom. A log bridge is not the bridge of Zhaozhou; how could the bright moon and clear wind ever be compared?" / Later he also went to Baoning and likewise requested \[the master\] to ascend the seat. The commissioner took up incense and said, "The Dharma drum having sounded and the precious incense having just burned, on the crown of Yangqi's head I ask the Master to drive the wedge once again." Baoning struck his staff once and said, "Driving the wedge is already finished; let the great assembly bear witness." He struck \[the ground\] once more and immediately descended from the seat. / Again he went to Yunju and requested Foyin to ascend the seat. The commissioner took up incense and said, "Meeting on the ground of awakening, how early it was! The hawk-stench cloth shirt has now been taken off. If you wish to know Yunju's single mysterious phrase: take care, in the back garden a donkey eats grass." He called to the great assembly, "This single pinch of incense will perfume heaven and scorch the earth!" Foyin said, "Today I had no convenient opening, smeared in the face by this fellow!" and struck him. He then said, "'Lord Xie has come a thousand li to visit; / together we speak of the deep bamboo path on the Eastern Mountain. / I lend you a dragon to ride out of the cave; / if drought is met, let it turn into pouring rain.'" He threw down his staff and descended from the seat. The commissioner bowed and rose. Foyin said, "Have you caught the dragon?" The commissioner said, "It is already right here." Foyin said, "How do you ride it?" The commissioner waved his arms, danced, and walked off. Foyin clapped his hands and said, "Only this fellow is somewhat comparable."
