> Chan Master Daolun of Yanding at Yueding in Qizhou. He ascended the hall, and after a long pause said: 'Before the relic stupa, flowers bloom emitting their splendor; beside the Vairocana treasury, turtles play in the pond. Mist rolls up from the mountain hall, clouds conceal the Buddha pavilion. Green creepers shade the eyes; an old crane circles the sky. This is fully sufficient to aid your inner capacity and promote your Way externally. Why must this mountain monk come out and give pointers? Even though it is like this, it must still hit the mark to do. Tell me, what is the matter that hits the mark? / Many thanks to the moon above Mount Potalaka, / Extending its light, it constantly reaches the pine gate.'
> He also said: 'What on the Double Ninth assists a monastic household? / Every branch of the hedge chrysanthemums puts forth flowers. / Not imitating the Marquis of former times drinking with companions, / For you I brew and present Zhaozhou's tea. / Just this single cup awakens from the great dream; / Lu Tong's seven bowls boast in vain.'
> After a long pause, he said, 'Please strike the staff once!'
> He also said: 'Timely rain passes frequently, row upon row of houses are cool; / The insects and armours of the wild fields all share the light. / The Chan master lies down high, with no remaining affairs; / Gaining the long lingering resonance of the chime at the treetops. / Right at such a time, who is the one who knows the tune?'
> After a long pause, he said: 'After Ziqi departed, a thousand years have been in vain; / The moon rises over the precipitous cliff, the flowing water is cold.'
