> Chan Master Ruxiao of Huanglong in Hongzhou: A monk asked: 'A guest came from afar and showed me a jade disk one inch in diameter. What is the jade disk one inch in diameter?' The Master said: 'A thousand peaks arrayed in emerald green.' The monk said: 'What about right at such a time?' The Master said: 'Ten thousand plants grow in awe-inspiring majesty.' He further asked: 'What is the realm of Huanglong?' The Master said: 'The mountains join Mufu; the waters pour into Dongting.' The monk said: 'What is the person within the realm?' The Master said: 'Although his features are ugly, whenever he speaks words, they become fine literature.' He further asked: 'Speech and silence involve transcendence and subtlety; how can one penetrate without transgressing?' The Master said: 'The mountain flowers bloom like brocade; the ravine water is pure as indigo.' The monk said: 'Thank you, Master, for answering my question.' The Master said: 'I tell you not to walk the road below the mountain; clearly it is born right beside the road.' He then said: 'Where the mist and clouds break open, pavilions and palaces support the sky; the water's moon and the pine vines reflect each other's radiance. Human harmony and the realm shine; the willow buds just turn green. The Buddhadharma and human affairs are without lack or deficiency. Even though it is like this, how do you say a single phrase that does not fall into seasonal opportunity?' After a good while he said: 'Although Shaolin gazed at the wall, in old age his mind was also lonely.' He also said: 'White clouds are rolled up by the wind, the universe is vast and clear; the moon is imprinted upon the vast sky, its form dividing among the myriad waters. If you disperse like this, you will immediately say this mountain monk lacks a balanced reckoning. If one goes further to sing of the wind and chant of the moon, that again becomes stirring up waves and generating wind. Right at such a time, what is right?' After a good while he said: 'Secluded birds do not dislike the broad expanse of the mountain; / fish and dragons, how could they tire of the deep emerald pool?'
