> Chan Master Fanyan of Dongshan in Ruizhou was a native of Taipingzhou. Ascending the hall, two monks stepped forward together. One monk bowed, while the other monk asked, "What is it like when one can act freely and so acts?" The master said, "An eraṇḍa becomes a sandalwood tree." The monk said, "When in high spirits, add to the high spirits; where there is no romance, there too is romance." The master said, "Sweet dew is indeed a garden of caltrops." Ascending the hall: "'My mind is like the autumn moon, / Cleansed, bright, and pure in the green pool. / Nothing can compare with it; / Tell me, how can I describe it?' Hanshan toiled without merit. And then there was Shide, who said: 'Not knowing this meaning, / In vain do you苦ily practice.' Speaking like that, he could not even save himself. Usually, wielding a dung-basket, holding a broom, acting wild and crazy—that was still a little better. Even if Mañjuśrī and Samantabhadra were to appear again, if they came before Dongshan's gate, they would all at once be turned over to the director of affairs: those who kindle fire kindle fire, those who sweep the ground sweep the ground. In the front corridor and the back rack, by all means avoid clattering the spoons and messing with the chopsticks! Old Master Fenggan will not wag his tongue any more. Withdraw from the assembly and drink tea." Ascending the hall: "'One produces two, two produces three'—it cannot be held down; it vast encompasses the sand-realms. Deyun goes straight up the Wondrous Peak; Sudhana on the contrary enters the tower. The bride rides a donkey, the mother-in-law leads it. Mountains are green, waters are verdant; peach blossoms are red, plum blossoms are white. Each speck of dust is a Buddha-land; each leaf is a Śākyamuni." He then joined his palms and said, "May I ask, disciples of the Buddha: this morning begins the new day; late spring is extremely warm. Are your daily movements light and agile, and are you walking in peace and joy? In a short while I shall come specifically to the upper quarters to pay my respects. You need not stand for long." Ascending the hall: "On the twentieth day of the twelfth month, the year is about to end. A traveler ten thousand li away has not returned; the great assembly are all guests in another land. Is there anyone who returns to the root and reverts to the source?" Striking the whisk, he said, "The remaining snow before the gate melts under the wheel of the sun; who shall be sent to sweep the red dust inside the room?"
