> Chan Master Jiuxian Faqing Zujian of Longxing Prefecture was a person from Yanling. He once sat at Tianning in Chizhou with his saṅghāṭī covering his head. Vice Director Zeng passed by and asked, "Where is the venerable's immortal home?" The Master said, "Yanzhou." Zeng said, "Is it the same as or different from here?" The Master pulled his saṅghāṭī down to the ground, bowed with hands clasped, and said, "Has the official ever been to Yanzhou?" Zeng was at a loss. The Master said, "Wait until the official has arrived at Yanzhou, and then I will tell you." After residing \[as abbot\], he ascended the hall and said, "Ten thousand willows and a thousand flowers open in the warm sun; / At the tip of every single flower there is a Tathāgata. / The wondrous discourse of non-duality is the matrix of empty space; / Setting its subtle words in motion, they pervade the nine realms. / Ha-ha! Laughable! And tell me, what am I laughing at? I laugh that Jueyuan's heels do not touch the ground." Ascending the hall, he brought up: "Muzhou instructed the assembly, saying: 'All of you have not attained an entry point; you must attain an entry point. Having attained an entry point, you must not forget that this old monk clearly spoke to you. Still you do not understand; how much less when it is covered over!'" The Master said, "What did Muzhou mean by speaking in such a way? If you are not yet there, listen to Jueyuan provide a footnote: 'Monk Zhang sees companion Wang; / Companion Wang calls out to monk Zhang. / Where the oxen were pastured last night, / On the mountain ridge and at the village in front. / On the west side of the brook, they do not drink water; / On the east side of the brook, they do not graze on grass.' What do you have Jueyuan do so that you understand? There is no choice but to go like this." He then pressed both hands down on empty space and descended from the seat. A monk asked, "What is taking away the person but not taking away the environment?" The Master said, "Clear and calm." The monk asked, "What is taking away the environment but not taking away the person?" The Master said, "Calm and clear." The monk asked, "What is taking away both the person and the environment?" The Master said, "Clear and clear." The monk asked, "What is taking away neither the person nor the environment?" The Master said, "Calm and calm." The monk said, "Today this student came buying iron and obtained gold." The Master said, "Where did you get this topic from?"
