> Head Monk Muan Daoqiong of Kaishan in Jianning prefecture was a native of Shangrao in Xin prefecture. The monastic groves respected him as an elder of venerable virtue, and Letan also considered him thoroughly practiced. On the day he shared the seat, he once brought up the story of Bodhidharma returning to the West with a single shoe, saying to the assembly: "Passing away while sitting, dying while standing, or transforming upside down are indeed not non-existent. But as of yet, there has never been one who departed and reappeared, leaving behind a shoe. Is it that later descendants cannot match the Patriarch, or is it that the Patriarch had this extra move?" He then laughed loudly and said, "Old wild fox!" In the winter of the gengshen year of the Shaoxing era, the governor of Xin prefecture changed the Vinaya monastery of Chaohua into a Chan establishment and invited him to be its first ancestor. The master said to the special envoy: "I originally had no intention of being in the human world; my wish was to rectify the mountain for the sake of the lineage. Yet I fear I mostly cannot go and accept the invitation." He had already taken the portrait of Letan and the two characters 'Mu An' (Wood Hermitage) in his possession, and wrote a verse entrusting them to Old Heng of Qingquan to send to his Dharma heir, Huishan, which read: "His mouth is unfit, that old fellow Xiang; / He loves stirring up right and wrong in the monastic groves. / Hand it over to the Head Monk of Mount Xuefeng: / Scold him severely for me, do not spare him!" Looking at the special envoy, he said, "Pass word to the vice minister for me: my travel plans are extremely pressing, so I have no time to compose a reply." His voice ceased and he transformed.
