> Dharma Master Luan of Western Shu was thoroughly versed in both the Great and Small Vehicles. When Fozhao resigned his duties and resided at Jingde, the Master asked Zhao, "Why do Chan practitioners' words mostly lack foundation?" Zhao said, "What sūtras and treatises do you study?" He replied, "I have a rough knowledge of the various sūtras and am quite conversant with the Hundred Dharmas." Zhao said, "Just like yesterday it rained and today it is clear—under which dharma is this subsumed?" The Master was bewildered. Zhao raised a backscratcher, struck him, and said, "Do not say it is fine that what Chan practitioners say lacks foundation!" The Master said indignantly, "Yesterday it rained and today it is clear—under what dharma is it ultimately subsumed?" Zhao said, "It is subsumed under the twenty-fourth, the dharma non-concomitant \[with mind\] of time." The Master was suddenly awakened and immediately bowed in thanks. Later, he returned to Shu and resided at lecture gatherings, showing students the direct path without getting bogged down in names and marks. Many among the assembly drifted away. He then spoke a verse and ended his lectures, saying: / "The crowd sells flowers, while I alone sell pine; / its green color cannot match their red. / Reckoned up, in the end it does not suit the times; / let me return into the emerald mist!" / Thereupon he lived in seclusion for twenty years. Monastics and laypeople longed for him and repeatedly requested him to expound the Dharma. Smiling, he replied with a verse, saying: / "Hiding my tracks, I secluded myself on a lofty peak; / but the lofty peak would not tolerate me either. / It is better to return to Jinli, / and sell green pine just as before." / The assembly bowed in rows and repented their faults. Lecturers of the two Shu regions vied to rely upon him.
