> Chan Master Zongmi of Longya in Tanzhou was a native of Yuzhang. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The master said, "Do not talk in your sleep." The monk asked, "What are all phenomena?" The master said, "Already fallen into the second \[order\]." Ascending the hall, when the great assembly gathered, the master said: "It is already round and complete; there is no need for carving and chiseling. Return to the hall and drink tea." Ascending the hall, \[the master said\]:
> "Do not compare this body to courtyard flowers:
> After courtyard flowers fall, spring comes again;
> Once this body is gone, where will it be?
> The three realms are vast and hazy—it breaks one's heart with sorrow."
