> Hermitage Master Zhihe of Erling in Qingyuan Prefecture was a son of the Zhang family of Yufeng in Sutai. As a child, he once practiced sitting meditation under the eaves of an overhanging hall; when the hall collapsed, his parents thought he had surely died, but the master kept his eyes closed and remained composed as before, so they allowed him to leave home; upon coming of age, he was ordained. He hurried to pay respects to Letan. When Letan saw him, he asked, 'What are you doing?' The master was about to reply when Letan struck him, shouted again, and said, 'What do you call Chan?' The master immediately grasped the import and said, 'Chan has no after and no before; waves settle on the great sea, the moon prints the blue sky.' Letan also asked, 'What is the Way?' The master said, 'The red dust billows vast and wide; no arrangement is needed, inherently lacking nothing.' Letan approved. Next, he called on Chan Master Bian of Mount Heng, who was especially in accord with and esteemed him. During the Yuanfu era, he reached the two hermitages of Zhongfeng and Qiyun on Xuedou, staying for more than twenty years. He once had a verse saying:
> 'A bamboo conduit brings two or three pints of wild water;
> A pine window frames five or seven patches of idle clouds.
> The man of the Way's livelihood is only this,
> Left for the human world to see and hear.'
> Many who were aspired to the Way went to see him. A monk arrived and bowed. The master said, 'Where have you recently left?' The monk said, 'Tiantong.' The master said, 'How high is Taibai Peak?' The monk shielded his forehead with his hand and made the gesture of gazing into the distance. The master said, 'There is still this.' The monk said, 'I ask the hermitage master to say.' The master also made the gesture of shielding his forehead. The monk hesitated. The master struck him. Earlier, when the master and Chan Master Jiao of Tiantong sought the Way together, they made a covenant, saying: 'In the future, the two of us should sit atop solitary peaks and sheer summits, gazing at the clouds and heavens as men beyond the world. We must not be like those nowadays who register their names with the government, bowing and humbling themselves to others.' Later, Jiao broke the covenant; when he arrived, the master refused to receive him. The policy critic Mr. Chen used a stratagem to entice the master out of the mountains. He lived at Erling for thirty years, possessing no superfluous belongings, with only two tigers attending at his right side. One day, because they frightened people, he dismissed them with a verse. On the twelfth day of the fourth month in the eleventh year of Xuanhe, he sat cross-legged and passed away. The policy critic Mr. Chen recorded the master's conduct and deeds and the extraordinary signs of his passing in great detail, and had statues made of him attended by the two tigers, which exist to this day.
