> Chan Master Mingzhao Wenhui of Wuzhou. A monk asked, "How does one take a step forward from the top of a hundred-foot pole?" The Master said, "Mount Tiantai in the south, Mount Wutai in the north." The monk said, "Everywhere meeting the road of return; at all times reaching the original source." The Master said, "If green mountains and white clouds are not face-to-face, being acquainted is just like not being acquainted." The monk said, "What can be done about the student having a path to turn the body?" The Master said, "Be sure not to lose your body and life!" The Master then paused for a long while and said, "If you disperse like this, already you will have fallen into sevens and eights. Yielding to beginners, I cannot avoid talking it over repeatedly. Today is the fifth day of the fifth month; for all of you, I bring up a phrase from before your parents were born: / Its bright radiance shines brilliantly, illuminating heaven and earth; / Moreover, it is without present and without past. / The Buddhas of the three periods struggle to explain it; / The patriarchs of the six generations uselessly point it out. / In the hall, Kāśyapa vainly raises his fist; / Outside the gate, the Vajra guardian's eyebrows stand straight up." / The Master clapped his hands, laughed heartily, and said, "What am I laughing at? Laughing at the lantern entering the exposed pillar!"
