> Chan Master Shushan Liaochang of Fuzhou Prefecture. A monk asked: "What is Shushan's phrase for guiding people?" The master said: "The jade ruler in the bosom is not lightly tossed; the gold mallet in the sleeve strikes right in the face." Ascending the hall, he said: "Casually let go, even the Buddha's hand cannot cover it; deliberately drawn in, the great earth is devoid of the finest speck of dust. I tell you: do not doubt or guess! Everywhere and in everything, behold Sudhana. When distinct beneath the mallet, as if having attained the purpose, the eyes of boundless toiling mortals open naturally."
