> Chan Master Wenyan of Fuyan in Tanzhou was a native of the Yang clan of Chengdu Prefecture. A monk asked, 'Who is the true master of Dinglin?' The Master said, 'Sitting and severing the tongues of all people under heaven.' The monk asked, 'I wonder how one can draw close?' The Master said, 'Gaze at it and you go blind.' Ascending the hall, he said: 'Sitting directly in front cuts off all traces of ordinary and sage; letting go with the hand, heaven turns and earth revolves. Directly bringing the sun and moon into alternation, tigers roar and dragons chant. Each and every thing is heard by the ear and seen by the eye. What is atop established truth? Do you understand thoroughly? Asita! Bah!'
