> Chan Master Faru of Yunju in Nankang Commandery was a son of the Hu family of Danqiu. Relying on Chan Master Rui of Huguo, he shaved his head and received full ordination. He visited various lineage masters throughout eastern Zhejiang. Later he went to Longmen and reported what he had realized to Foyan. Foyan said, 'These are all scholarly understandings, not the ultimate matter. If you wish to resolve birth and death, you must seek wondrous awakening.' The Master was startled, yet believed with full conviction. One day Foyan ordered him to take charge of the kitchen storehouse; the Master firmly declined because his cultivation of the Way was not yet accomplished. Foyan urged him, saying, 'Just take up the post. There is certainly someone in there who will preach the Dharma for you.' Before long, rising in the morning and opening the kitchen door, he saw the sacred monk from afar and accorded with what he had not yet realized; he immediately reported this to Foyan. Foyan said, 'Do you still see the sacred monk here?' The Master went forward, made an inquiry, and stood with folded hands. Foyan said, 'I told you: there is certainly someone who will preach the Dharma for you.' After becoming abbot, he ascended the hall: 'If a single dharma exists, Vairocana falls among ordinary mortals; if the myriad dharmas do not exist, Samantabhadra loses his realm. Right here, existence and nonexistence are both dismissed, gain and loss are both forgotten, so that the Buddhas of the ten directions cannot be seen. Tell me, everyone: In the twelve periods of the day, where do you establish your life? Wearing a straw raincoat, standing sideways beyond a thousand peaks; drawing water to irrigate vegetables before the Five Old Men.' He ascended the hall: 'Within heaven and earth, between the cosmos, there is a treasure hidden inside the mountain of form. Yunju, however, is not so: Within heaven and earth, between the cosmos, there is a treasure.' He threw down his staff and said, 'Great assembly, you must also recognize it!'
