> Minister Mo Jiang, styled Shaoxu, was from a family that had lived for generations in Fenning, Yuzhang. Serving as an official in Western Shu, he visited Chan Master Nantang Jing to inquire about the essentials of mind. Nantang had him bring it to mind and examine it in all places. Just as he went to the latrine, he suddenly smelled a foul odor and hurriedly covered his nose with his hand, whereupon he had an awakening. He immediately presented a verse: / "Always gifted and elegant, loving refinement, / How often have I laughed at worldly people seeking outward? / In myriad distinctions and thousands of differences, nowhere to be found— / When attained, it was originally at the tip of my nose!" / Nantang replied: / "As soon as one dharma is penetrated, all dharmas are complete; / Boundless wondrous function—what more to seek? / The green snake leaves its scabbard and the demon armies submit; / The blue-eyed barbarian monk nods with a smile."
