> Chan Master Shouyuan of Sui'an in Wuwei of Hanzhou was a native of that prefecture, surnamed Shi. At the age of twelve he suffered from an eye ailment. He went to rely on Chan Master Neng of Huimu at Qichan and received full ordination. Leaving the Gorges, he arrived at Baofeng. It happened that Feng ascended the hall and cited Yongjia: 'A single moon is universally reflected in all waters; the moons in all waters are embraced by the single moon.' Hearing this, the Master was liberated and enlightened. After assuming the abbacy, he ascended the hall and said: 'Using the one to unify the myriad: a single moon is universally reflected in all waters. Gathering the myriad back to the one: the moons in all waters are embraced by the single moon. Unfurled, it encompasses the Dharma realm; gathered in, not a hair's breadth remains. Although unfurling and gathering take different paths, this matter originally has no divergent principle. If only you can set an eye upon the root, only then will you see that the buddhas of the three periods and the successive generations of Patriarchs all manifest from within this; the three baskets and twelve divisions of all the sūtras all flow forth from within this; heaven and earth, the sun and the moon, and the myriad phenomena all stand established from within this; the three realms, nine planes, seven destinies, and four modes of birth all emerge and submerge from within this; the hundred thousand Dharma gates, limitless wondrous meanings, and even all the crafts and technical skills of the mundane world are entirely the present function of this matter. Therefore, when the Bhagavat twirled a flower, Kāśyapa smiled; when Bodhidharma faced the wall, the Second Patriarch thereby pacified his mind. When peach blossoms were in full bloom, Lingyun's doubts were completely wiped clean; when bamboo was struck with a sound, Xiangyan abruptly forgot what he had known. Even to Panshan's awakening to the Way at the butcher's block, and Maitreya's receiving people in the fish market—truly it is said that in moments of haste and faltering, it must be here; walking, standing, sitting, and lying down are all within it. Since it possesses such extraordinary wonder, and possesses such brilliance; since it is so vast, and so all-pervading, why do you all nevertheless have delusion and awakening? Do you wish to know? Fortunately, there is no place it does not shine; obstinately, there are times of not being clear.'
