> Academician Upāsaka Liu Yanxiu, courtesy name Ziyu, went out to govern Yongjia and asked about the Way from Chan Master Dahui. Dahui said: 'A monk asked Zhaozhou, "Does a dog have Buddha-nature or not?" Zhaozhou said, "Wu." Just look at it like this.' Later, the gentleman attained realization through the 'cypress tree'. He had a verse: 'Zhaozhou’s cypress tree is utterly without rhyme or reason; / Pursuing it through external objects is exceedingly difficult. / Everywhere the green willows are fit to tether a horse; / Beneath the gates of every house runs the road to Chang'an.'
