> Chan Master Puyun Ziyuan of Yunju in Nankang Commandery was a native of the Yong family in Mianzhou. At age nineteen he passed the scriptural examination and was ordained. He remained studying the teachings for precisely five years. Passing through the mountain passes and traveling south, he visited and questioned all the great venerable teachers, finally arriving at Longmen. One day, seeing a painted barbarian figure in the corridor, he had an awakening. At night he reported it to Gao'an. Gao'an cited Fayan's verse: / 'On his head he wears a sable cap; / At his waist hangs a ram's-horn awl. / His words are not made for people to understand; / One must get someone to translate them.' / Gao'an then took fire with tongs, showed it to him, and said, 'I have translated it for you.' Thereupon the Great Dharma became completely clear. He presented a verse: / 'The sounds of foreign speech cannot be exhausted; / Beneath Qiyun Pavilion they are understood in an instant. / The opening of the mouth is vast and without boundary, / Swallowing whole the water-chestnut thorns of Yangqi.' / Gao'an sent the master to rely on Foyan. Foyan said to him, 'My Way has gone east!' He ascended the hall and brought up the monk who asked Yunmen, 'What is the phrase that penetrates the Dharma-body?' Yunmen said, 'Hiding the body in the Northern Dipper.' The master said, 'South, north, east, west—tens of thousands of thousands; / Heaven and earth, above and below, are both boundless. / Meeting together and seeing one another, we laugh haha! / Bending fingers and raising the head: the moon in the middle of the sky.'
